Wild Places - Winner
Ice creation

This is a category for landscape photographs, but ones that must convey a true feeling of wildness and create a sense of awe.

While on a Zodiac in rough seas around the subantarctic island of South Georgia, Robert spotted the iceberg in his winning picture. Despite the coming storm, Robert headed towards the horizon to investigate.

Robert said: “The challenge was to capture something of the beauty and wildness of the scene, while waves buffeted the Zodiac and spray covered me.”

Icebergs are made of freshwater, not saltwater, which is why they float. They began as falling snow thousands of years ago. At any one time there may be 300,000 icebergs in the Southern Ocean, swept along up to 40 kilometres a day by wind and ocean currents.
