Guest Speakers
We are fortunate enough to have 4 fantastic speakers to bring real
insight and inspiration to Light & Water – 2007.
Mark Carwardine
With an extensive collection of photographs taken in more than 100
countries around the world, Mark is an accomplished and well-
published photographer. He has been photographing wildlife and wild
places for more than 20 years and, although he is best known for his
whale and dolphin images, his work covers everything from Great White
Sharks and Gaboon Vipers to magnificent Frigate birds and Komodo
dragons. He spends more than half the year traveling the world in
search of wildlife and exploring wild places and is continually
adding to his image collection.
Mark will be once again Chairman of the Judging Panel for the 2007
Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition - the world's biggest
and most prestigious competition of its kind.
He is part way through a world tour to photograph endangered mammal
projects in no fewer than 13 different countries for the David
Shepherd Wildlife Foundation.'
Heather Angel
Heather Angel is a British award-winning wildlife photographer who
traverses the globe in search of pictures – from polar bears in the
Arctic to penguins in Antarctica. Even as a child she lived a
peripatetic life, with her father serving in the RAF, she attended 14
different schools in as many years.
Her passion for nature, led to a zoology degree at Bristol
University; but it was only whilst working as a marine biologist that
she became hooked on photography. In addition to managing her own
stock library, Natural Visions, she is a prolific writer with 50
books – including one devoted to water – to her name. Always an
enthusiastic communicator, Heather tutors workshops all over the world.
For more than a quarter of a century, Heather Angel has been at the
forefront of nature photography in Britain and her work has been
recognised by many awards both in Britain and overseas. Heather
Angel was President of the Royal Photographic Society from 1984-86
and she has been a Special Professor at Nottingham University since
1994.
Major solo exhibitions of Heather’s work have been on show in London
as well as in China, Malaysia and Egypt. Her latest exhibition,
Natural Visions, toured Britain throughout 2000 – 2004.
Louise Murray
Specialising in the wilder aspects of the natural world, Louise's
features have been published internationally. Many focus on the
marine environment, from the tropics to the polar regions, others
involve extreme adventure travel or reflect Louise's intense interest
in natural history and science. Louise has been a freelance
journalist and photographer since 1992. Louise's photography is sold
around the world for editorial, advertising and graphic design purposes.
Paul Kay
Paul Kay holds a degree in Scientific Photography and an FRPS. He has
been shooting underwater for 25 years and has worked as a full-time
freelance photographer since 1990. His photographs have illustrated a
number of books and he has written several including "Underwater
Photography" and the "Divers Guide to Lundy" (for English Nature).
Paul shoots a variety of commercial material including Landscapes and
his images have appeared in BBC Wildlife, the National Trust
Magazine, Diver, and numerous other publications. Most recently he
has supplied images which have been used in "Ocean" published by
Dorling Kindersley.
Competition
Each delegate to Light & Water – 2007 is invited to submit 1 to 3
images for the event competition. Experience has shown us that this
type of challenge is usually met with a striking and inspiring set of
images for everyone to enjoy.
The Theme:
The theme for the competition is ‘Light & Water’ and the images can
show any natural subject with a ‘watery theme’. We would welcome
pictures taken both above and below the water and we will be looking
for both technical accomplishment and originality.
What We Require:
We would like one to three 10x8”, 10x12” or A4 print, mounted on
board no larger than 12x16” or A3. The delegates name needs to be
printed clearly in block capitals on the reverse of the print/s.
don’t worry too much about the exact format – it’s the pictures we
are most interested in!
Prizes:
There will be a first prize and 2 runners up prizes with a total
value of over £500.
Entries will be collected from delegates at registration in the
morning and will be placed for everyone to see in the lobby area of
the event for lunchtime. The entries will be judged during the day by
our guest speakers and then winners will be presented at a ceremony
at the end of the afternoon. Entries can then be collected before
departure.
