All,
If there are any flickr users out there I have set up an NWBCC flickr
group. If you are already registered with flickr then go to http://
www.flickr.com/groups/nwbcc/ to join the group. Even if your not
registered you can still have a look.
If you have no idea what I am talking about then read the
"Introduction to flickr" below, then come back here. We get lots of
hits on the website every day. We have some news and stuff on there
but as someone suggested to me today, we need more of an online
community. This is where flickr comes in. Using the groups in flickr
I hope we can build up a virtual camera club, not only can we upload
photos but we can have discussions in these groups. There are a
number of people on ClubTalk that don't come to the meetings, they
just like to hear the chat on the mailing list. But the mailing list
is not really interactive, we can't post a photo for comments for
example, not easily anyway. Its easy with flickr. So give it a go,
and let me know what you think.
Thanks
Patrick
Introduction to flickr
flickr is a photo sharing site.
It allows you to upload your digital photographs and organise them
for sharing. You can sort them into groups, tag each image, view them
by time and date and more. Uploaded images can be marked as publicly
viewable, in which case the whole world can se them, or only viewable
by your friends or family. It is up to you who you make friend or
family.
Your designated friends and family form your list of contacts. When
they update their photos you automatically see the latest photos on
your home page. You can view these individually, or as a slide show
right in your web browser. There are even free applications available
that will create a screen saver using your latest flickr photos.
To upload photos there is also a free application available. This is
simple to use and quick to learn. There are loads of alternate
methods though, plug-ins for Windows XP and iPhoto to name but two.
Registering with flickr is free
for a basic account (yes, another password Peter). With this you get
unlimited storage and can upload 100MB worth of photos every month.
If you upload only small jpegs no more than about 800x600, that is a
lot of photos each month.
Even if you don't want to share your photos with friends and family
there are still plenty of reasons why we should make use of flickr as a club. There are
hundreds of groups already set up. Relevant to us are the groups for
Slimbridge, Bristol by Night, Bristol Zoo and even a group for the
BS3 postcode area. You can join one or more of these groups, upload
your photos to one or more groups and all the members of that group
see it automatically.
Any questions, please email me or use ClubTalk (or start a topic on
our flickr group).
